Cambridge's Garden Growing Conditions
Cambridge sits in one of the driest parts of the UK — annual rainfall averages around 550mm, compared to over 700mm in much of England. This has a significant impact on lawn and garden maintenance: Cambridge lawns are more susceptible to drought stress in summer than those in wetter regions, and growth patterns are different to national averages.
The relatively flat Cambridgeshire landscape also means frost risk is higher than in coastal or urban-warmed areas — late frosts in April and May are not uncommon and can affect tender plants and early garden tasks.
Spring — March to May
March: First cut of the year when grass begins growing. Set the mower high for the first two or three cuts — cutting newly growing grass too short stresses the plant. Apply a spring lawn feed if required. Prune roses to an outward-facing bud.
April: Establish regular mowing rhythm (every 1–2 weeks). Treat moss and weeds in lawns if needed. Begin light hedge trimming of formal hedges (not if nesting birds are present). Edge all lawn borders.
May: Lawns growing actively — maintain regular mowing. Avoid cutting hedges now if nesting birds may be present.
Summer — June to August
June–July: Peak growing season. Weekly mowing typically needed. Cambridge summers can turn dry quickly — raise mower height during dry spells. Never cut more than one third of grass height at once. Continue edging and border maintenance.
August: Main hedge trimming season after nesting. A single cut to most garden hedges should be done now. Lawns may slow in dry Augusts — reduce mowing accordingly.
Autumn — September to November
September: Second hedge tidy if needed. Leaves beginning to fall — clear regularly to prevent lawn smothering. Final opportunity for lawn repairs (scarifying, overseeding, aeration) in September.
October: Reduce mowing frequency as growth slows. Clear leaves from lawns weekly — a thick layer excludes light and creates conditions for moss and lawn disease. Cut back perennials that have died back.
November: Final cut of the year — not too short. Clear the last of the fallen leaves. Garden largely dormant now.
When Professional Garden Services Are Worth It
Regular professional garden maintenance is particularly valuable for Cambridge homeowners who travel frequently, properties on the rental market that need to look their best consistently, and gardens that have become overgrown after a period of neglect. An established regular service maintains a garden at a consistently good standard far more efficiently than trying to catch up after gaps.
