The Problem With Pet Stains and Standard Cleaning
Pet accidents on carpets are one of the most common carpet cleaning problems in Cambridge — and one of the most frequently mishandled. The instinctive response of scrubbing with warm water and carpet cleaner actually makes the problem significantly worse in the long term.
What You Should Do Immediately
Blot, do not rub. Use clean white cloths or paper towels and press firmly into the stain to absorb as much liquid as possible. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading. Repeat with fresh cloths until very little is transferring.
Apply cold water only — not hot. Hot water causes the proteins in pet urine to set permanently into the carpet fibres, making full removal much harder.
Avoid supermarket enzyme sprays for now. Apply them later — applying immediately to a saturated area dilutes the enzyme and reduces effectiveness.
Why Supermarket Cleaners Are Not Enough
Pet urine contains uric acid crystals that are not water-soluble. Standard carpet cleaners and steam cleaning with plain water will remove the visible stain and temporarily reduce the smell — but they leave the uric acid crystals in the carpet fibres. These crystals reactivate in warm, humid conditions (including warm weather and steam cleaning), which is why treated carpets often smell worse after getting wet.
Only enzyme-based treatments break down uric acid at a molecular level, permanently eliminating the source of the odour rather than masking it.
When to Call a Professional
- The stain has been there for more than 24 hours
- The smell persists after DIY treatment
- Multiple incidents in the same area (the smell attracts repeat use)
- You are preparing for a tenancy checkout inspection
- Visible yellowing or discolouration remains after cleaning
Professional Pet Stain Removal in Cambridge
Professional hot water extraction with specialist enzyme treatment is the most effective method for permanent pet stain and odour removal. The high-powered extraction removes the treated material from deep in the carpet fibres rather than just redistributing it.
For Cambridge properties with multiple affected rooms or persistent flea problems, we also offer pesticide treatment alongside the carpet clean. Please mention this when you enquire.
